is this blight ?
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:36 »
Could anyone tell me if the bottom leaves are blight? I was told before that the top leaves are just die back- most of my 2nd earlies have this to some extent.
The picture is of my maincrops and the leaves at the bottom have recently appeared throughout most off the crop?

Thanks
dmg

Yep, that's blight.  Get all the leaves off as and when they appear, if too many, cut off the foliage leaving just a stub of stalk to tell you where the spuds (hopefully) are.

In two weeks time dig up your crop.

Cheers,    Tony.

The bottom leaves are probably blight.

The top leaves are magnesium defficiency which is often seen as the plants start to die back.

Check the underside of the leaves. If it is blight the brown spots will be surrounded by a grey/white ring.

Down here where it's maybe warmer/dryer we only see the fungal ring when we have wet weather.

(What I'm trying to say - is that the ring isn't always there in dry weather)

I thought my spuds were just dying back until I followed your advice above.  My Red Roosters definitely have blight as confirmed by others at the plot.  First time I've been affected.  All plants cut down to stalks and will be left for a couple of weeks.  Foliage bagged and brought home.  Cheers.
