I knew I'd seen a report on a trial of electric netting as a fox deterant see below link.  I was looking to buy another and came across this reference which reports on a trial which seems to show it's the electric field they can sense so reports of foxes jumping fences (not something I've witnessed) could be due to faulty maintenance.
