I was remined by a BBC programme that this is the time of the year that snails start to hibernate.

Knowing this it would pay great dividends to start a snail hunt on your lottie this weekend.

They tend to hide under or in the same places each year.A good look around and you will soon find lots of sleeping snails.

The more you find the less to have a go at your seedling next year.

While you are looking for snails you should come agross a few slugs do for them and again you will have far less to deal with next spring.

Take a bucket with you to drop them into, then fill it with water to dispose of them.If you fill the bucket before you will have to carry it slopping about and its not such a good idea on a cold day.

Happy hunting.

Reminds me of the snail that won the lottery... when asked whats the first thing he was going to buy?

He replied " A fast car with a big S on the side, so when I drive by people will say " look at that S car go"( escargot )

Good tip btw MKH
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Just like the insect football team that bought a high scoring earwig.

Why have I got to wear this jersey with  a zero on the back said the earwig. All the others have got a proper number.

You will soon find out said the coach.

When the team ran onto the pitch, the crowd all start to chant.

Earwig "0" Earwig "0" Earwig "0".........................

Just cutting back the grass paths on our allotment today, after years of neglect, and it would seem we have a snail/slug nursery going on! I was squishing all the eggs I could see, but then also saw alot of ground beetles, so wondered whether I was then denying them their food.

What is the best course of action.  I wondered whether just by exposing all the eggs to drier air would kill them off, or if squishing is the best answer.  I really do not want all those eggs to hatch, otherwise we will be in BIG trouble next year!
On the very steep learning curve of organic veg growing!!!!

The beetles will soon find others to eat.Get rid off all of them, you are helping yourself no end.Plus now the beetles will seek out another nest and clean that up for you.

Keep looking and you will find many more.

Our hibernating hedgehog is doing his job well, he must wake up every now and then as we are finding loads of empty snail shells around his nest.
He gets a bit annoyed with us when we make too much noise in the garden, and makes a loud banging noise which echoes round his nest, so now we creep about so as not to disturb him.
