Today's the day for carrot inspection...
« on: September 29, 2012, 07:06 »
We followed some advice to sow some late carrots this year, and I gave them a total covering with debris netting, which has a very close knit.

They're about a foot high now, and filling out nicely, but we're thinning them all today, and will be peering at each one to see if they've been 'carrot flied' with the blasted insects getting through the tiny holes.

It worked on another system, where we grew the carrots in large pots, up on a table, and covered them with the same netting, so fingers crossed this time...

Fingers crossed indeed Growster. :) By many accounts I have heard this year, late carrot sowings have been the most or only successful ones.

ooh - makes me nervous - going to have a look at mine tomorrow.  they are, however, uncovered but they are 'Fly away' so fingers crossed!  mine were a late sowing as well.

Phew...

We think they were left alone, here are some of the thinnings, the rest we'll just pull when we need some confirmation that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel...

Looking good. :) And I didn't even hassle you about taking pictures as I knew you would have the camera to hand for the hoops. :D You did photograph the hoops, didn't you?

After I unfleeced my carrots, i built a debris netting 'fence' around them to about 4ft high.  The only problems I had with them was some splitting where they tried to get too big too soon I think!

Nice to see the theme unravelled here Ann...Thanks!

There are a couple actually, but they're hidden under the others - it took me about an hour to arrange them like that...;0)

The chap on a next-door plot does that, Annie, he gets a result most years!

It's jumping over the fence each time which wears him down a bit...;0)

Having grown ours under fine mesh this year, they were too close to the parsnips and the ones that did come up got swamped.

The late ones are in a separate little tunnel and look OK -- nowehere near as big as yours though Growster.

I am thinking of trying the fence approach next year, bu am worried it might blow over on our site as it is soooooo windy

It was pointed out here, that if there is a bit of a blowy day, the fly can actually find themselves inside the fence, KC.

The big pots we used, and stood on a low table, then netted, seemed OK, but germination was very poor, presumably due to the bad spring and summer. I think they worked out at 10p a carrot - (Resistafly...paaah)

I suppose someone could say that I could have bought a stretch of Enviromesh for that, but maybe they won't...;0)

I always forget how tall parsnips grow, but this year, they're in a separate bed on their own, and have only themselves to blame!

Ahhh but mine has a door!  The last cane that is attached to the netting is stuck in the ground just the other side of the first cane in the block, and held together by a short 'S' hook.  There is no gap in the netting, but I can easily get to my carrots!
