Cabbage White Butterfly Eggs Already
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:03 »
Hi,

Just thought I'd warn newer veg growers to the fact I've already found a batch of cabbage white butterfly eggs under the leaves of my Brussel Sprout plants.

I thought it was a little early But I'm relatively new myself So I dunno?

of course I personally saw to it that they got squished in my fingers :)

Please keep a eye out for this pest. Last year they ravaged some of my barassicas.

i also recommend that  if you invest in a bit of decent netting and get them coverd well, you dont have to worryabout the cwb or the birdys.cos after last year i swore they would never get me again!! :)

Hi,

Yeah, I have 50% of my brassicas under netting atm. That cost me an arm and a leg so toher half are not netted so I got not so much choice atm anyway.

If anyone has a cost effective place I can buy more netting please let me know ;)

As long as i check them regularly I'm hoping I can stop significant damage. and maybe next year or later on get more netting.

But yeah what I've seen with netting so far it is highly recommended. it keeps so many things off them its unbelievable.

Wilinsons have loads of cheap netting - Just about everything at risk is covered !

Agree John, I got a 50m long x 3m wide roll for £37, the seller was fairly local so I saved £6 p+p by collecting from him, allowing £3 for the petrol, that's still only 80 pence per metre for a brand new roll, and it should last years.  Even if I'd have paid P+P it works out at 86 pence per metre.

And if you don't need 50m, ask around on the plot, if 2 or 3 of you chip in even better.
