I have started my first plot this year and I dont yet own a hoe. My plot has been made from area that was grass, and the grass is already re-growing and my seedlings havent even emerged! I will have some serious weeeding on my hands once seedlings appear!
I have read that I need to sever them with a hoe but there are loads of different types, dutch, draw, swan, onion etc. Which one will suit my needs. I am quite short if that makes a difference - 5 foot 1 and a half (every half counts at this height)! :D

I just got a dutch hoe from b&q but the main thing is to get a file as well to keep it sharp - works like a dream then
-
I've always used a push pull hoe myself. I think they are brilliant :!:

 I've got one of each....the pull hoe i use for earthing up and the dutch hoe for weeding.
-
oh and little onion hoe which is very useful for getting down to the plants.

its a wilkinson sword swoe for me, as well as a swan necked for earthing up.
-
we have a wolf double edge thingy. because of its shape it wont earth up and has not got a sharpe corner to get close to the plants. but its great at devistating the bulk of the weeds and is realy sharpe

an onion hoe is invaluable.... for everything from onions to earthing up and making drills for seeds...and one full size one for heavier stuff....

Do you mean this kind DB

I use one of these for earthing up tatties but it is not accurate enough for me to use for hoeing.
I use this type for hoeing between crops, the edges stop you nicking the stems.

Yes it is a push pull hoe, and it is brilliant. I think the wavy edge helps to keep it sharp. But Worzel tales care of that type of thing

think we done this one before liz but you need to use a grind stone 1st then a sharening stone to get that mach 3 edge, once you have a good edge it wont need mutch sharpening cus your push action in the soil will keep it sharp.
