Title: Eglu Nest Box
Post by: violet on January 11, 2009, 09:55
Sooooo just how many hens can you fit into an eglu nest box???

Last night I came to close the "pop hole" and couldn't see any girls... WHY? because there were two Black Rocks (quite large) and five bantams (ok three are not quite fully grown) cuddled up in the nest box and one balancing in a jaunty, wobbly way on the entrance of the nest box!  the other two bantams were snugglked up in one corner on the roosting bars.....

and I worried that there wouldn't be enough room for all the birds to sleep together!

Omlet did assure me that there was more than enough room for 10 especially if some of them were bantams.......

Bless them.

(My purple cube arrives in the morning   :D )

Currently I have a wooden coup and I was worried about space, I had four chickens and they all squashed together in a tiny area each night. The house was for 6 - 8 hens but sleeping like that there would have been space for twice as many.

I guess it's when they wake up there's not much space then

I am getting a second Eglu at the weekend. Once the girls are all introduced to each other, and free ranging together I suspect I shall have to go out after dusk and put them into seperate eglus so they dont all squish in together for the night
