U3A
« on: May 03, 2019, 11:06 »
I have recently joined this organisation, and am astonished at the things there are to do.   I go to the first monthly meeting next Thursday and the speaker (who I already know) is an assistant organiser for the NGS in Sussex.    I haven't managed to study at length all the different subjects there are,  but I have paid to go to Wisley Gardens in September.  The cost by coach including entrance and gratuities is £15. ,  this is because they are members of the RHS, National Trust etc.   so really we are only paying for the coach.    It should be doubly interesting because there is a modern and traditional sculpture trail running for just a few weeks,   it includes works by highly credited and new artists.   Also the RHS Annual Photography Competition Display.    I am really looking forward to going, I love Wisley anyway.
Do any of you belong to one in your area, and if so what are your interests ?    regards,  Mrs Bouquet

U3A is a brilliant idea, Mrs rocket is a "speaker" in 2 groups. It does rotate between a few who are specialists in that particular area. Shakespeare and poetry.

All U3A groups are run independently  across the country but under the U3A umbrella.
I belong to a fast growing one which is only £8 to join then each interest group has it's own expenses so charge to cover them.
Our gardening group is a small on in which I assist by looking after the money side, we meet once a month sometimes we have a speaker and others we just chat with plant swops.
I play a much larger role in running a walking group which has weekly walks by volunteer leader which I collate and do all the emails about.
I can honestly say joining 9 years ago after my husband died has changed my life, first by making so many friends some of which I have enjoyed holidays with but mostly it has given me the feeling of self worth and improved my social skills no end as I lead a very narrow life before.

It's a great idea, unfortunately locally, most of the classes/meetings that I am interested in are held in a village that is quite difficult to get to by public transport and an arm and a leg by taxi, so I never joined :(

I have seen them on line and intend to join when we eventually move back to UK.
