Anyone planted 1st early spuds in the greenhouse / poly-tunnel yet? The earliest I have planted them (Rocket) was last year on the 14th Feb and they were ready at the end of April. Just wondering if I could plant them any earlier? To be honest they weren't that flavoursome but alot better than anything in the shops. Roll on outdoor planted Lady Christl :)

If mine had arrived I might have done :lol:
Last year we planted them at school while the snow was on the ground (obviously kept them indoors) and then moved the bags to the unheated greenhouse once the leaves were out the top.
No date, but around mid Feb - crop was Ok though :D

On 14/01/12, I purchased 2.5kg of Pentland Javelin First Earlies from my local Wilko Store for £3.28. (they have a good selection to chose from) and set them to chit in egg cartons.
Today, I checked for any signs of life only to find that my egg cartons were filled with organic eggcups; mice having eaten the tops from all potato sets. Of course, the top ends contained the chits so I must now purchase a fresh supply. .......Take care.

I too got some PJ's from wilko's, I've started chitting 6 just this weekend gone, but I think I'll do a few more.
The book (my new bible), says they'll be ready and out just in time for the main event of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers etc.
If the weather holds in the next 2/3 weeks (possible cold snap forecast next week), I'll be starting a few beans for the poly too.

You can plant first earlys in polybags OR sacks in the greenhouse or polytunnel
charlotte or any other first earlys are good - they will only start growing if the tempeture increases do not over water the compost keep slightly damp..
The only problem you may have is the frost / if frost is expected cover with fleese.
it can be done the other end of the season as well i planted potatos in the polytunnel in the end september from jba potatos and had fresh new potatoes for Christmas dinner....

Thanks all. I think I may plant some this weekend which will be the earliest I have planted them to date. Perhaps being cautious I will review a long range weather forecast first just in case severe weather is around the corner. I have some Swift chitting in readiness :)
