Chicken poop
« on: September 09, 2010, 09:47 »
We are using Bliss bedding (dust extracted shredded rape stuff) and I poo pick every morning.

We don't have a compost bin at the moment, so I've just been flinging it on the veg bed.  Will that be ok?

Also.. another semi-related question.  Our breeder recommended we put the food in the chicken house.  But they scratch the bedding into the hopper and then they can't get to the food.  I've put it outside this morning, which takes away the problem.  Is the benefit of putting it in the house purely because of attracting vermin etc?  I thought I'd just take the food and water away each night when we put them to bed.

Any advice would be really gratefully received.

chicken pooh is very acidic so you have to watch that you don't get it onto plant leaves.
The general advice is to put the feed and water outside the coop and remove it every night. If you have a very large shed then you could hang the feeder inside and place the drinker on a breeze block or similar to avoid the shavings getting inside them  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thank you joyfull  :)

When we have looked after my brother chooks in the past we have always taken the food in at night, and put it in their run, so I think we will adopt that strategy from now on.

Maybe we should invest in a compost bin, I'll look into it!
