Evening all,

Here is the grafted Tom plant that I got for b&q for 4quid!!!! I just got this and a pepper to see how they go.

Have had it no more than 2 weeks and it already seems to have grown nearly double in size, it is also setting its first truss also!

It's a beefsteak tomato "belriccio" any grew / eaten these before?

Any advice? it's looking rather good to me

I don't have a green house so would it be ok to keep in a back room at the window or stick it outside? I do have a sheltered porch

Thanks

I wouldn't put it outside until the start of June to avoid the risk of frost.

Any temperatures lower than 10C and the plant will definitely sulk.

Here in York the daytime temps haven't got much above that for the last few days, let alone the overnight temps!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks again yorkie, would you put it outside rather than in the porch room when it's time?

I don't know whether the variety is an indoor (usually greenhouse) or outdoor variety - does it say on the care label you got with it?

If you do keep it in the porch, you may need to pollinate it with a brush.

It says greenhouse suited but will thrive in some summers? I read that as greenhouse but we will put outdoors just to sell you the plant. I do get plenty of sun in the yard and it's pretty sheltered.

What is it they don't like outside is it just the warmth of the greenhouse it needs? Or does it not like rain etc?

Again sorry for all the newbie questions but you guys are the magic

The problem with growing tomatoes outside is that, because they take alot longer to ripen (especially a beefsteak), they are outside all the way through summer before they really start cropping nicely, you then have the problem of blight attacks.
To really see the benefits of grafted plants they are best grown in a greenhouse. Plants destined for outdoor growing will not have been sown very long now and will be nothing like the size of yours, so the bigger the plant gets, the more sunlight it needs and the more leggy and spindly it will get if you cant put it outside for another month at the very least. Do as best you can but i would look to buying a couple of non grafted plants in about 4 weeks, then gradually harden them off before you put them out.

I do have some toms that have just popped through but just bought this as a see what happens kind of thing but also want to make the best of it. Will keep it indoors for the min and see how it goes.

I have good sun when it starts to come, I also have some old pallets and a south facing wall, might see if I can build a raised planter type for it to sit n the south facing.
