too late for Carrots?
« on: August 07, 2009, 12:28 »
OK, so the pots are up (well half!) and I'm thinking what to put in their bed next. The soil is nicely broken up so I was wondering if it's too late for carrots??

If you can give them some protection against the frosts later on they should be ok. Thick fleece or straw  :D

It is a gamble but if the season is kind you will should get a crop.

Carrot fly is active until mid September so they will need protection.

I'm trying out a variety called Eskimo this year which claim to have some frost tolerance.

Good luck.
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

I took a chance with some parmex about a fortnight ago.  The packet said sow up to July, so can't wait to see if they'll produce anything

For future reference (too late now) I usually have a couple of pumpkins, corgette or some kind of squashy things sitting in large plant pots waiting in the wings to dump into the potato plot which will still be heavily mucked and nice soil to let the squahes romp away in once they are set free from their pots.

Two greedy crops from one plot, then next year I grow legumes which helps to bring the nitrogen back up again, then Brassicas, then Roots, then muck and Potatoes again and so on.

I sowed some carrots two weeks ago yesterday in the hope of a late crop but so far no sign of germination.  We didn't get any luck last year either so weren't going to bother again but had a free packet of T&M seeds.

It is usual for carrot seed to take so long?

not unusual to take two weeks... three and you probs have a problem
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I think they might have started to germinate now - I was picking over the seed bed yesterday to get rid of little weedlings when I noticed what looked like little bits of grass coming up.  I pulled out a couple then realised the fact they were in a row meant they must be the carrots.  I was expecting feathery shoots, but now I realise the the seed leaves (cotyledons?) look like grass.  Is that right?   Uh oh ... I have now probably alerted every carrot fly for miles around ;)

yep, first two leaves are long and thin, then come the feathery ones.
