Title: Green house or poly tunnels?
Post by: RuthG on May 21, 2008, 12:34
Just wondered what people prefer? I'm looking to get a green house, but then wondered about poly tunnels, just wondered what the collective opinion on here was!

I voted greenhouse as I have 1, but would also love a pollytunnel IF I had the space

If you have the space, polytunnel all the way. Loads of room, easy and quick to put up, easy to repair with tape, suprisingly strong (I live in one of the windiest parts of the country and my 58ft tunnel is in its third year, with no problems)

Ventilation can be a bit tricky, but you can always cut holes in the side and tape them back up in the winter.

If you buy second hand they can be very cheap

I had a greenhouse given to me... after the first year I found it was not nearly big enough!  If I had to choose, would definitely have pollytunnel.  Only the cost stops me, I have the space..  Having said that, I love my veggie patch, greenhouse and shed, and am more than happy with that until the day comes when.....................................  :D  Maybe one day!!!

I've got a 24ft polytunnel, brilliant for growing crops in but I still prefer my greenhouse for propagating, sowing  seeds etc due to the ventilation issues. :D

Definately polytunnel, ive had both and find the tunnel keeps a more consistent temperature. They dont get so hot in the summer and stay warmer in winter,  they are easy to repair with a bit of clear tape but the most important for me was they are child friendly as i think that agricultural glass is lethal stuff. Ive just got a new 10x8 tunnel which was £300 delivered, it has a sliding door and a louvre window at the other end. A similar size greenhouse with toughened glass or polycarbonate will prob cost twice that new.

Hi Ruth

I think greenhouses are to expensive and dangerous if you have children and polytunnels you lost height on the sides, so I combined the 2 and built a polyhouse! :D

All the stength of a greenhouse with very hi-tech thermal anti fog polythene, the best of both worlds  :D

Its 10ft x 10ft x 8ft high and it only cost £250. :thumright: and the veg love it in there  :D

Take care
