Swollen eyelids "HELP"
« on: August 04, 2009, 20:33 »
I have just noticed that some of my birds have swollen eyelids, some have their eyes closed, some have a bubbly discharge from their eyes!!!!! they seem to be coughing. They got very wet in the rain last week, could they have a cold  or how can i tell if its something worse.  How can i treat it.

Also is it ok to mix different age chicks in the same coop, i have some which are 8weeks and some which are 3?????

Any advice on both subjects would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Chicken little

Your chooks sound as if they have a mycoplasma infection.  They will need some medication from the vet for the whole flock.

I can't answer your question on chick but others will soon.

If more than one is affected, and the eyes are swollen i would suspect mycoplasma, one of mine had it, it can be treated with antibiotics from a vet.

agree with the upper respiratory infection (as all of these type of infections present in the same way bubbling eyes, runny nose, coughing and sneezing!) and to see a vet! if you ask for aureomycin which is very good my vet said! there is no egg withdrawel, or there is baytril but when i used that i threw away about 100 eggs!  :(
as with the chick question go by your judgement on the size difference! i tried once putting some week old bantams with 2 week old lf and the biggest literally flicked a smaller chick across the brooder by accident whilst it was scratching around
i have just today popped some 3 week old chicks into a brooder with some 4 week olds as they were all pretty much the same size! (sorry im being abit long winded here arent i) the younger they are the more willing they are to except the newcomers i have found too, i am having real problems now i have put some 5 week olds in with my 8 weekers! poor little things are petrified!  ::)

hope this helps

If they have their mum with them they should be ok - although their mum may let the older ones know who is the boss  :D

unless your there to supervise and break up any fights i wouldn't, the big ones can and probably will peck the smaller ones and could cause injury, i keep my differant aged chicks seperate untill they are all roughly the same size, then i put them in pens next to each other for at least a week before allowing them to range together, i haven't had any problems so far and this system seems to work for mine.

Mine were ok but they had all been free ranging together before that and mum took them by herself not me - suppose different circumstances require different methods  :D
