having looked at what is available locally i am considering orpington bantams, are these good layers? this may also seem like a stupid question but do bantams produce smaller eggs than battery hens? i assume they would be smaller but what do i know!

Orpy banties are lovely! I have 3 well australorps, the australian version. They lay smal to medium so would need to double up in baking cakes etc and they do go broody!

We have bantams for eggs - not orphs though. We love their eggs - the yolk is same size as in a regular egg so theres loads for dunking - and they make the best poached egg (had to play about wwith the timings at first though - now takes same time as the second side of a piece of toast under grill!) I made a lemon cake with them (we use double number recipe says) - it was BRIGHT YELLOW from the yolks.

Whatever chickens you get, you will love them - but just dont be put off by size of bantam eggs as they are worth it (plus you can have twice as many chicks and justify it - not that i used that excuse on my other half to mask my ever growing chicken addiction.... :roll: )
