Egg-like thingies under the leaves of my okra
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:30 »
Hi - Please help!

I am growing a couple of okra plants on the windowsill in my kitchen. They have reached 3 sets of leaves.

I have noticed some transparent egg-like structures on the underside of the leaves.

At first i thought they were water droplets - but now they are multiplying and cover nearly the entire underside of each leaf.

They fall off easily when touched and feel hard.

They don't seem to have spread to anything else - yet!

Haven't noticed any whiteflies - so don't think it's them.
Have had a problem with fungus gnats in other pots - but don't think it's them either. But have noticed some small white crawlies in the soil which seem to jump when touched.

Can anyone advise?

Cheers.

I would put them into new pots and fresh soil and into a different growing position .After rubbing off any suspect eggy thingies and you could try washing leaves with a weak soapy solution. The small white crawlies in the soil , could be whitefly hatching ? .Good Luck !

That second link is a good picture PB.  You can see the hindged tail it uses to 'spring' into the air when disturbed

I believe this is normal for okra plants, not a pest at all, my okra plants always display this characteristic

You need to clean and repot though if you have those little white crawlies in them.  I didn't know what they were, but years ago I used to grow a lot of plants in my office, and I had some lovely cyclamen that were devastated by little white crawly things in the pots!!!

Cyclamen are very susceptible to vine weevil larva (white crawly things in the potting soil).
The tiny glass like nodules under okra leaves are totally unrelated and nothing to worry about, don't panic.
Hope this helps

I found this site after googling to find out about just such an occurance on my Okra plants. Thanks for the discussions and the news that the eggs/dropplets are of no concern.
