Title: What age do Polands and silkies start to lay eggs??
Post by: bedifferent on August 27, 2008, 07:04
I have some of both varieties and i reckon they are about 16 weeks but not an egg between them. Beaker has turner out to be male - so he has an excuse. The others appear to be a bit slow to get going.

Thanks

Another ten weeks minimum.

Even todays modern hybrids which are bred with the sole intention of being egg machines don't start laying as a rule until after they are 20 odd weeks old.
The breeds that you mention, are not known for their egg laying prowess and are more likely to be affected by the change in the seasons. If your  birds were coming upto age in the spring, they might lay a little earlier than these will at this time of the year.

Well....my silkie is about....24 weeks? and she's not laying yet!!  :(

and to be honest, I'm not expecting her to lay this year. I could be wrong but as we're heading to the end of 'summer' I'm thinking it's a bit late for her to start this year? anyone know any different to make me a happy bunny??

It was ages and ages before my Silkies and Polands started laying. I cant tell you how many weeks they were tho cos I didn't make a note. Even now they arent as regular at laying as the others
