my first year with broccoli and....
« on: September 15, 2011, 17:24 »
where do the florets grow from I think I can see some forming now sort of in between the stems is that right? seems like a daft question but I think I have only ever seen it in a packet before
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

Top centre and also the leaf axil, (between the leaf & the stem).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Cut them as soon as they are a 'decent' size, not as big as those monsters in the shops.  They will keep cropping.     Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I assumed the OP was not about calabrese (which is sold at giant size in the shops), but about broccoli. Does calabrese behave in the same way? I've never grown it before.... first year of some very nice broccoli though and just had the first few stems recently.  :)

Calabrese grows the same way as broccoli, biggun (ish) in the middle and then more skinnier ones in the leaf axils after the middle one has been cut off  :D

I'm growing Romanesco...which is calabrese in some catalogues, and broccoli in others...., but  it has a head more like a cauliflower!
Even more confusion  :nowink:

and you can get some little side shoots off them too, if you cut that luscious head out and leave the plant to grown on a bit  :D

I was pretty horrified to see all my purple sprouting broccoli flowering at once 2 weeks ago - I thought they were a winter veg??! Do I just keep cropping, and will they last until the winter?
