Can someone ID this fruit tree?
« on: January 08, 2014, 12:59 »
I have taken on a new allotment plot (in addition to my existing one) and it has an established fruit tree on it. I would really like to know what it is but have found no old leaves, fruit or other clues. Maybe someone knows what it is by looking at the bark and buds (see attached photos)? I thought it could be a cherry or plum but don`t really know.

Good idea, will try this. But I have my other allotment plot right next to the new plot with the unknown fruit tree and never noticed what tree this is. I think if it is not your plot you don`t really pay attention to other peoples fruit trees. At least this applies to me  ;)

Looks like an apple to me. Have a coupleof cherry trees at work and they don't look like yours. If it's staying put, you won't have long before it tells you what it is.

Cherry buds tend to be in clusters like crowns around the twigs... these are not like that.

It does look more like an apple imho

I think your second guess was close.
The worrying thing is that you would have noticed if it had been full of fruit. So maybe it is a cherry as they are temperamental to say the least.
If you send your pictures to RV Rogers they will probably identify it for you.

I'd have said cherry, and it may just be a 'volunteer'?

It's just that we got hold of a lot of wild cherry logs and they look like these pics!

I would say cherry, the horizontal lenticels are very distinctive.  Err on the side of caution and do not prune yet.  You will know come spring.

Thank you all for your replies. So most say it is a cherry tree. I cannot remember seeing it full of fruit the last years so I will probably not get anything from it in the near future. It was properly planted and staked so I think it is a proper variety, not a seedling tree.
As you said the best will now be to wait and see. Once the leaves/flowers are out it should be clear.

I know what you mean. I googled cherry tree buds and apple tree buds and the buds from my unknown fruit tree really look more like apple tree buds. But the bark looks more like cherry bark. That is all very confusing...
