Peppers and chillies
« on: September 30, 2010, 00:05 »
Are these self-pollinating? I ask because I've moved the plants inside to ripen off the fruit and they're still producing loads of flowers.......
Should I snip them off?
Thanks guys and gals!

I don't know too much about peppers myself but my flatmate grew a few plants indoors this year and he pollinated them using a fine tipped paintbrush.  It must have worked as he grew some big ol' chillies to show for his efforts.

You can use a small artist brush to pollinate if you want, but I just give the plants a good "wiggle" each day and they seem to pollinate fine.

as said, a little tap or wiggle will pollinate, but if left they will drop off on their own - it happened to me earlier in the year before I realised I had to teach them to dance!

Yes, in agreement with tapping and wiggling - I do this to my toms as well :D

Ive posted quite a few times on chillies.  Its the one thing I seem good at!

I overwintered one from last year and its now got its third flower flush since Christmas.  had two great crops already.  Others sown February are on their second flush, and some big chillies already growing, despite a big harvest early August.

They are all in relatively small pots on sunny south facing windows.  Minimal feeding and water.  Hand polinated (and I mean hand - I just use my finger and poke gently into each flower a couple of times!).

Works for me  8)
