Newby Alert, serious risk of stupid questions  ;o)  

Grew quite a bit in back garden last year very hit and miss.

Carrots okay
Parsnips great
Broad beans and peas roaring success
Courgettes coming out of my ears
reasonable tatties...

Have built a series of raised beds using scaffold planks as half way between decorative and functional with bark chip paths...

Have also taken on a half size allotment and progressing well.  dug over 9/10ths and onions etc and early tatties are in.

Question 1) Have a series of fruit canes at one end and some appear dead some with growth.  What should I do, think they are raspberry but is identification key here before I deal with/leave?

Question 2) Have got some coffee ground for slug/snail deterrent in garden as we have a couple of chickens and although netted off they will get into the veg area so needs to be pet safe. how much can I use and how often?  Also how much can you put into a dalek bin given its getting quite a lot of chicken sh*t as well.....

To expand on Q1 - we've had this discussion before regarding unidentified raspberries.

The concensus of opinion was that it's best to leave them first year to see if they are a summer or autumn fruiting variety, as they need different pruning treatment.

With the summer fruiting ones the old canes need cutting out once fruiting has done, to leave the new shoots that came up during this year. They will bear next year's fruit.

With the autumn fruiting ones, the canes that appear in the spring bear fruit the same year. Once fruited, all the canes are pruned out.
