What to do with a lost rabbit?
« on: June 03, 2011, 17:53 »
My Mum has today found a baby rabbit (not a wild one).

She has checked with her neighbours and no one has lost one.
The house is next to a busy road so my Mum is assuming whoever has lost it will pressume it has been killed.
What should we do with it?

I was about to have her current pet rabbit so I would happily re home it but I feel a little bit guilty that someone has lost there new pet rabbit...

What should be done? Any opinions anyone?

Thanks

If you think its someone's pet, you should report it to the local police and or RSPCA or other animal welfare places in your area. The owner just might be holding out all hope of finding it and may be asking around. The police may not seem very interested ::), but there will be a record if anyone else comes asking....

It sounds over the top but around here we get a lot of lost/found cat posters put up in various places, ie sellotaped to the railings at the park or the occasional lamp post. Just a piece of A4 with "Rabbit found" and a contact number written in bold letters would be ok.  Obviously it depends whereabouts you live (and whther you'd want to give out your number) as to whether this would be possible.

Perhaps it was unwanted and someone just dumped it there?

Poor little thing!

If you make a reasonable effort to find the owner then you shouldn't feel guilty if you keep it. If you put up a poster, don't describe the rabbit. They can tell you what he looks like if they phone. There are people who will phone just to get a free bunny. Phone any local animal sanctuaries but my guess would be it was dumped and has had a lucky escape.

I have checked at the local vets this morning and they have taken details in case anyone comes in asking.
My Mum is going to wait a week to see if anyone comes looking or puts up a notice before deciding what to do.
