Shed Foundations
« on: July 10, 2012, 13:47 »
I知 about to have my first ever shed delivered. Can I use wood chippings as the foundation? We have a mountain of chippings on the allotment and it would obviously be a lot cheaper than paving slabs.

I don't think wood chippings would provide a stable enough base. It might work if you make a treated wooden framework for the shed to sit on or even just put slab pads at each corner of the shed.

If I put slab pads at the corners will the shed sag in the middle (my DIY qualities are really showing here)?

It shouldn't do, but I guess it depends how big the shed is. It was just an idea that came to me, as I've heard of the practice many times before - OH used to work for Portakabin before we moved up here and they used to install the units on site using this method. :D

As Argyllie said it depends on the size but also the construction.
Portakabins are rigid contruction so can be supported on there lifting frame by slabs.
If your hut is any bigger than 8x6 I would put some intermediate supports in.

Quite right about the construction Terry. ;) I expected some garden shed experts would check my idea. :)

I went with a paving slab base which sits on levelled sand.  I then spaced out a number of bricks, about 16 it was, in line with the shed base frame.  Not just around the edge but in a 4x4 formation so the middle is supported.  Keeping it off the ground helps prevent rotting and allows me to store canes etc underneath.  Been standing for 3 years now without any problems.

Forgot to say I did add a couple more pieces of 2x2 to the base for additional support.
