Title: Sell by Date of Eggs
Post by: Elaine G on September 27, 2014, 22:31
How strictly do you guys stick to sell by dates on eggs?
My mum had about 18 eggs in her fridge. I suspect most were out of date.
There were 2 loose ones dated June
She is 82 and lives alone, and gets very cross when I chuck out her out of date food.
I decided the best approach was to buy some new ones and replace them all, but how strict should I be? With most foods I would go by how it looks and smells.
Mine never go out of date, we are usually complaining there are none left!

Thanks

Elaine

Bad eggs are obviously bad when you crack them - they look and smell SO bad

So I really don't worry about the date stamp :nowink:

I just put mine in a bowl of water if I'm not sure about them.  Any floating high on the surface I discard.  :)

I do the same as Auntiemogs. Put em in a bowl of water. The floaters get chucked, the ones that stand up get used in baking and the sinkers get used for omelets.

I'm not sure she would remember about the water, but she wouldn't eat an egg that smelt bad so I won't worry too much about the eggs.
I did throw away the fresh cream cakes that were in the bread bin  :(
Her memory is failing and she gets confused easily, bless her.

Thanks for your replies
