Title: Another poorly hen.
Post by: Chas on March 02, 2009, 10:54
Hi,

To begin at the begining (thanks Dylan) we have 10 free ranging hens and 9 ducks, some months ago we took in 2 unwanted hens in pretty poor condition. 1 of the hens has since had to be dispatched (a month ago) as she was failing due to diarrhoea (very dirty around the vent and not eating), I tried worming and giving her extra protien but to no avail.

We now have another hen that is obviously sick, not the same symptoms but when I was feeding them yesterday I noticed she wasn't eating, as I stood and watched she was actually sick on the ground, I caught her and and induced her to vommit (green bile, sorry to anyone with a stomache like mine):ow!!!!!! to clear her crop but this morning on letting the chickens out she is still not eating.

Sorry if this is a bit long winded but I tried to include the history of the case, can anyone offer any advise please?

Thanks for any replies.

Hi Chas and welcome!
Sorry to hear your hen is poorly.
Difficult to say whats wrong really perhaps a few more symptoms?
Lets start with her crop -green fluid doesn't sound good -does her breath have any odour? and does her crop feel normal? or squishy, balloon like? good time to check first thing.
Weight -does this feel normal? temp is she hot? feel under wing
Beak/ eyes - breathing -any discharge, rattling wheezy breath?
poops...normal or loose - greeny coloured?
Sorry for all the questions.....

Hello Foxy, thanks for the reply.

I can't say her breth smelt, but then I din't get too close  Her crop is ballony and very empty, she feels very light but her temperature seems ok, her breathing seems normal and I can't honestley say I've noticed rattling but I'll check, there are green poo's around the house.......

I hope this is of use?

Thanks again for the reply.

Charlie.
