Title: Do seedlings recover from slug damage?
Post by: Stratts on July 11, 2011, 08:55
As a noob I hadn't considered the amount of damage slugs can inflict on young plants and a lot of my plot has been nibbled!

I put a load of pellets down on Saturday but are the plants likely to recover?

1st major setback in my allotment career!!  ::)

So long as the growing tip hasn't been taken then they should be ok.

What plants are they and how big?

Hi Stratts, it depends on whether the slugs have just nibbled the outer leaves or if they have taken out the growing tip in the middle.  If growing tip has gone, then there isn't much chance, but if only outer leaves, then the rest should still grow.

A couple of weeks ago I saw one of my cabbages in the middle of the block was dying.  When I looked, a mole had made a tunnel right underneath seveal plants and that one was going brown and lying almost on the ground.  I didn't get around to taking it out, but the other day I noticed that one side of it is leafing up again.  It looks like the moe destroyed half the root, but the other half are still growing!  I'll have a lopsided cabbage!! lol

It depends if the whole growing shoot in the middle has been munched off, because the plants won't recover from this.

If is just few leaves though they generally get over it  :)

What are they?

(Stompy, just seen your post   )

I know, its like waiting for a bus (well in civilization when you get more than one a day! ).  You wait ages, then 3 come along at once!

By the looks of it I thnk only the leaves have been nibbled so might be ok.

Cabbages, radish, yuki cabbage, broccoli, rocket all affected

I thought I'd lost all my pattypans that had been decimated by slugs and the growing tips munched.
One is definitely done for but the other 3 are putting out small leaves further down the stalk!!!
Just hope they get a move on!
(And slugs have been dealt with......)
