Onion sets had it?
« on: March 09, 2013, 16:46 »
My autumn onion sets are acting weird and I am sure this didn't happen last year.  My white onion sets are all sprouting and have between two inches and six inches of growth however some of the sets are squishy almost hollow, this has affected about 30%' the red onions are all fine, both planted at the same time as per the recommendations, is it frost damage? Are they beyond help

I asked exactly the same question last year, because it was the first time I had planted them. They all developed into quite large onions. Mine are the same this year. They will be OK.

The onions are using the reserve of food in the onion to put forth green stuff to use sunlight to convert into food.  So  ipso facto ! ! !  the sets will loose goodness a bit untill they get going into proper growth.

Cheers,   Tonyt  (the gin again).
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I agree! (Don't worry - I have trouble with my native language when I've had a few, never mind Latin!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
