In my experience ramblers grow massive and might not be suited to growing in containers.   Does it have to be ramblers, some climbers can be planted in pots but i think they always do better in the ground. :)
I'm sure someone with more rose growing knowledge will be along soon :)

I love pergolas.  Let us see it when you've finished it :)

I have grown climbers in tubs, but they seem to suffer after 3 or 4 years, probably the root restriction. They were happy again when I finally got round to planting them properly in the soil ;)

What about if you dug a big hole where you want to plant the rose and filled it with better soil.  Or would that just turn into a sump  which the rose wouldn't like any more than a tub. :nowink:
If you can get them into the ground roses with clematis going through them are beautiful together

At the bottom of garden it used to be a lake many years ago...(before my time) and so the garden is prone to flood a little with a lot of rain..so containers is the best option...maybe not roses then :(

Make a little raised bed just where each rose is to go.
They are in the soil so can put down deep roots, but will keep a little drier :)

Roses do prefer a clay soil - probably not too heavy though, but you may be able to lighten it a little.
