Title: A Chicken with a cold ?
Post by: whitley chick on July 01, 2009, 22:04
Hello, I am wondering can any one please give me some advice, Tonight when I have gone to put my Buff Orps in for the evening I have noticed one of my ladies is quite still and almost leaning to one side, struggling for air almost as if she has asma, i proceeded to remove her and placed her on the floor where she went straight for a very long drink coughed (more barked) then sat down with her head resting in the water still drinking coughing and sneezing, she can walk is not very alert, she has been moulting and my cockeril i think has been a bit too keen as she has quite a bald patch on her back, apart from that all of the Chicks seemed fine earlier and were quite happy all resting in the shade of my laundry room ! I am quite worried about her any help will be very welcome  :(

Hello!  soundws like a respiratory infection, i would get her to the vets ASAP for some antibiotics! (enough to treat whole flock as it spreads) i lost 2 girls just over a month ago with the same symptoms, baytril is the usual antibiotic of choice but there is also aureomycin which is good too with no egg withdrawel
Good luck
Debbie

Try adding apple cider vinegar to their water.

It should say on the bottle, I don't use it that much, only when my chickens seem to have colds, give it them for 1 week, works wonders.
If you can't find out let me know and I will have a look tomorrow.

You need antibiotics for an illness like that ACV is good stuff but it won't clear an infected bird or stop it spreading to the rest of the girls.

Remove her from the group immeadiately and don't let any of the other hens drink from the same drinker as her.

It will cost you £20 to £30 at the vets fro enough to treat them all. Be quick as it can kill overnight.
