Mini vineyard taking shape.

Well pleased with the way the vines have taken.

Most are going to reach the top of the cane and will be pinched out.

Start the trellis work towards the end of next month.

You may of heard of, 'Cloudy Bay' from NZ....well this will be, 'Stokes Bay' from Gosport in a few years hopefully.

Hi Pompey Spud,

What variety are you growing?

You might like to put the trellis up very soon as you dont want to disturb the roots to much.

Seyval Blanc. A variety that does very well in the UK.

Most commercial vineyards in the south east will have a few vines of Seyval growing.

pompey spud, i started something similar nearly 3 years ago and hope to make the first batch of wine this year. But something i learned is that when you build the trellsing it needs to be very sturdy as the vines do get very heavy, and will snap a thin diameter tresslis if you get a bit of a breese.

That's what I thought as well.

Luckily enough I came across a great article in a back issue of Kitchen Garden (12/2004) about a guy in Worthing who had done this which gave me the idea.

I'll be using the single guyot method with 2.5ft Metposts with 3inx3inx6ft posts.

These 2 sites are good as well.

What variety are you using and how's it going?

Haha Sunshine.

I've used just over a quarter of my plot for the main part and grown the rest of the vines round the edges on the boundaries.

25 vines in all.

I love gripples for trellising - the commercial galvanised steel and ceramic jobbies, not the green plastic ones. Our local fencing supplier sells them for a pound each, although they do come in bags if you want a lot. You probably don't need the special tool for short runs as pliers and/or a mallet used as a tensioning leaver will do the job satisfactorily, but it will cost about 50 quid if you want to do the job properly.
