I hope this is the right place
« on: May 27, 2022, 00:42 »
I have a strip of ground at the top of my garden, I used  to keep chickens on it for a number of years, but a fox got in and killed the lot

I never caught or saw the fox, but I gave up keeping chickens after that

I dug the ground up and planted spuds, beetroot, carrots, they did really well

The following year it was cabbages, cauliflowers, (i netted them to stop the butterflies and moths, but the slugs and snails was another story)

But I ended up with quite a good crop

This year, the wife wanted some wild flowers, so I duly bought lots of seeds and just raked the soil over to get rid of the few weeds

I have now got this huge amount of green stuff, not a flower in sight

I have no idea what it is, but there is a lot of it and to me it looks nothing like wild flowers

Has anyone any idea what they are and are they any kind of wild flower ?

I'm afraid I can't identify the plant growth that you have, but it is possible that the ground is too fertile to successfully grow wild flowers.  They tend to do better in poor soil.  I'm sure that others on this site can advise you better about the subject.

They are mostly common weeds, on the right is mostly Fat Hen and on the left I think it might be Red Shanks. As said above, it’s likely the ground is very fertile and so these weeds have outgrown the seeds you have sown.   Best to remove the lot and re-sow in well marked rows so you have an idea of where the flowers will come up and can hoe between the rows until the wild flowers get established. You can also identify the weeds between the rows to enable you to remove the weeds that are growing within the rows.

Alternatively, sow or plant some robust flowering plants such as calendula, cornflowers, nasturtiums, sunflowers etc.

have taken two more pictures, close up, I hope they can help identify them

They are about 2 feet high this morning

I thought the ground would be pretty poor after 3 growing seasons

Oh well it looks like I will be getting the strimmer out next week

(Off to the RHS flower show this weekend)

Maybe I’ll pick up some real wild flowers/seeds

If not there is always next year

Is it too late to sow seeds now ?

I am really annoyed I wasted my time cultivating weeds

Oh, well, they wont go to waste, I'll have find room in my dalek

We went to the Chelsea flower show, God it was busy
We stopped off at a stand Hot bin (compost in 30-90 days)
Anyone got one, had one or know anything about them ?
Do they work, are they any good and are they worth the money?
