Dying Peas
« on: July 05, 2019, 20:35 »
Planted a row of "Douce Provence" Peas, from saved seeds sowed earlier in the year. All was well until they started producing pods. Soon as that happened, the plants started to yellow and then dry up. As if the plants life cycle had started to telescope. Never seen this before, any ideas, please?
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

I'm wondering if this is natural selection in action? If you saved the seeds last Summer, when it was very hot & dry, then a shortened life-cycle this year feels like it could be an adaptation to those drought conditions. Setting any seed quickly becomes the most important trait, before drought kills the plant, rather than producing lots of seed. If last year's crop dried up early, you might have inadvertently selected for this trait?

It would be interesting to hear if any other seed savers are noticing anything similar.

Too dry at the roots and hot weather? My snap peas did the same, but my Hurst Greenshaft nearer the water butt so watered regularly, gave a wonderful crop :)

Too be honest, MoS, I thought something similar. But these are in a damp part of the garden, and have been watered well.
The comment about seed selection is interesting though.
