WheelBarow or Trolley Cart
« on: December 01, 2009, 19:08 »
After the handle eventually snapped on my hand me down wheelbarrow it comes as a bit of a shock the price for a replacement typically £30+ give or take. and trolleys not being that much more...

Is their any one on here that uses the trolley cart instead of the trusted barrow; and is their any advantage of having a cart over a barrow or vice-versa

Hi Kevin s and welcome, personally I would prefer a wheel barrow over a cart as I think a barrow will be easyer to manuever and tip out.
Where abouts are you at Hesleden? I am at Horden.

Not sure exactly what a trolley cart is, but I have a variety of 'things' to haul stuff, specific to purposes. I have a heavy duty garden wagon to haul sacks of things along with firewood, planters, whatever is too heavy to carry. I have a deep 4 wheeled barrow that is perfect for masses of leaves and garden cleanings. A 2 wheeled tip barrow to dump stones, manure, soil, whatever into specific spots. And an old fashioned barrow when the other barrow has a flat tire or is already in use. The latter isn't as steady or as handy as the others, and puts far more strain on me to keep balanced but I've had it for ages and won't throw it away.

How about both in one?

Well, this almost fits the bill:
  • light weight but it holds 200lbs
  • easily moved over rough ground or along the road
  • can be folded completely flat so takes up less room
  • interchangeable carrier / inner holder so 1 for the plot and 1 for cleaner jobs
  • environmentally friendly
  • long lasting (I've had one for nearly 10 years and used it every week)

I do have a wheel barrow as well but this trailer / trolley is so easy to use. I can pull it across the plot, load on the spot, hook it us to my bike and cycle home with a huge load and little effort. It holds a greater volume than a conventional wheel-barrow too.

we have both, wheelbarrow for most tasks, trolley for hauling heavier loads. If I had to choose though I could manage without the trolley but not the wheelbarrow.

wheelbarrow good for narrow paths and getting through doors into polytunnel etc. Sinks into soft ground though.Wheelbarrow good for tipping precisely but unstable if operator not used to one but gets better with experience.  Trolley cart more stable but can be tempting to overfill. Where easier to pull than push a barrow then trolley cart better. Trolley more stable for dumping sacks etc into from boot of car. If steps involved then sack barrow better or easy to build a narrow ramp for wheelbarrow which not easy to do for two wheeler.

Now that's logic

Love your trolley Learner. Even if you do get 2 punctures.

Punctures can be a real pain.  You can now buy a replacement punctureless wheel from B&Q for about £16 that has a similar broad tyre (green, foam filled) for equal (almost) ease of pushing.  Well worth considering.

But pushing a standard wheel barrow all the way home can be a very slow process....

........where as two wheels win everytime. ;)

Bit of a tight squeeze through the doorways though!!   :)

With ref to punctures in another post,a 1 litre bottle of OKO tyre sealant for about 9 quid  will do several wheel barrow sized tires .we have it in all our pneumatic wheeled equiptment and have not had a puncture since.

as a repairer of puntures/replacer of tyres, I must say that the stuff is great, untill you need to change the tyre, when it goes all over the poor person doing it
not so bad on small tyres, but it's a thankless task on larger ones........ :)
