Pollinating strawberries by hand
« on: December 12, 2012, 11:50 »
Hi, next year I am going to plant my strawberries in my fruit cage. I have just realised that the bees etc wont be able to get in and do their bit! Is it easy to pollinate the strawberries by hand similar to tomatoes?

Fruit cage netting usually has large enough holes to let the pollinators in  ;)

Hi, unfortunately mine is surrounded with debris netting. Only the top is accessible- bigger holes- about 6 foot up. I suppose the bees wouldn't venture that far up- would they?

It won't just be strawberries you need to pollinate by hand if your cage is covered i debris netting --- it could be everything I fear

Six feet high debris netting might be too much for bees etc to overcome, and drop down inside via the rof imho

You can tell I'm new to all this! I built the fruit cage at the beginning of the yearand  planted raspberries, a few grew, and my three year old blueberries grew ok. If I just keep raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, do I need to change the netting on one side  to larger holes to allow access for bees? I dont understand which need pollinating and those that dont.

The three you mention certainly require insect pollination, and although bees aren't the only pollinating insects the usual mesh size of debris netting seems to average around 2mm which would keep just about everything out.

If you're only replacing one side make it the sunniest side (if there is one) to maximise the increase in light levels you will also achieve, as the light transmission of debris netting isn't that great for summer fruits.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Hi, thanks for all your replies. I will change one side in the spring and yes, I am lucky to have a sunny side- occasionally!
