Aluminium greenhouse repair - advice needed please
« on: January 15, 2016, 19:17 »
I wonder if anyone can help me please? I had an aluminium greenhouse frame up on my allotment and unfortunately the bad winds have rocked it so the slot where the bolts slide into have snapped off. Other half says it's no good now but in the allotment spirit of make do and mend I'd like to repair it.

Any ideas and suggestions would be gratefully received 😊

Thanks for the link I've had a look but I can't see the parts I need.

I took the dog for a walk up to get a few photos of what I mean. The first is how the parts looked before snapping

Cut, drill and file a patch of the required shape but longer and rivet it to the existing frame with hollow (Tucker Pop) rivets.

I've done it and it works.  Cheers,  Tony. :D

Kleftiwallah's solution is the most practical.

As it is only preventing lateral movement and not load bearing you could drill a hole adjacent to the slot and wrap a wire round a bolt through that hole and the bolt that goes in the slot. A short diagonal brace or triangular plate like it probably has on the gable end at the gutter line would probably do the trick as well.

Worst case you can cut all the horizontals two inches shorter and make new slots It will also mean cutting the glass but better than a new greenhouse.

A walk around a few allotment sites would almost certainly find you someone with a collapsed greenhouse who might donate you that part. I don't know if you have 'Freecycle' in your area but around here there are greenhouses going on there regularly. I have acquired a couple that way to make cold frames.
