Crimson crush tomatoes very bushy at the bottom
« on: July 15, 2022, 16:13 »
My crimson crush tomato plants are very bushy at their bases, so much so that it is difficult to find the plant plot embedded next to each one for watering purposes. Should I trim them a bit at the bottom?

My Crimson crush seem to be doing the same this year. On closer examination they look like they are throwing up side shoots from below the soil, probably because I burried the stem quite a bit when planting as they were very leggy plants.
I tend to just pull them off along with any leaves that are touching the soil.

Interesting observation mine are doing the same but it’s the first time I have tried them. I will pull a few leaves off as I’m having the same watering problem. HH
Keep digging

I’ve given mine a good pruning too. They seem to have produced a lot of leading shoots: not side shoots from the leaf joints but by the main stem dividing into two.

I have two toms that have divided into two leaders at the top. I had this last year and wondered if I'd left nipping one as a side shoot out so left them this year so I could see more clearly. Looking today I can see one of the shoots is thicker now than it was so am thinking of cutting the thinner one out. Wonder why this happens.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I know Crimson Crush are cordon tomatoes, but every time I have grown them they have behaved more like bush tomatoes.

I now treat them as if they are a bush variety.  They require lots of staking but seem to do well enough.
