Using the soil in last year's grow bags
« on: February 16, 2011, 12:30 »
I wonder if someone can advise on this? I have 3 grow bags which were used for tomatoes and peppers last year. Am I ok to empty these onto existing garden soil for use in growing this year? I ask because I know that tomatoes tend to attract lots of pests. I don't want anything spreading to the rest of the soil in my garden.

either tip it onto the soil or add it to your compost bin  :)

Put where you had Potatoes or Tomatoes last year (if you grew any outside) - then, if you are rotating your crops, they won't see more Spuds or Toms for the next few years until the rotation comes round again. Or put it on the flower beds.

I mix some 50:50 with sharp horticultural sand and grow Carrots in containers, and some goes into the tubs / urns & hanging baskets (with some whole-season fertiliser - the sort that looks like hundreds-and-thousands)

Pretty much as Kristen has said, like him mine goes onto the old spud bed, which this year will be legumes.
I don't do outside toms so its spuds have a four cycle before they hit the same bed.
