Russian Vine
« on: September 02, 2013, 11:15 »
A neighbour at the end of our block has a Russian vine that blooms from the middle of summer until frost.  I admired it so an thought the bees would love it.  So I bought one this weekend and planted it next to my fence.  My SIL looked at me in horror and said it would probably, in time, creep into my bedroom and kill me in my sleep some night.   ;)  So I guess it must be a bit invasive?  Perhaps I'll plant in in our back garden where nothing seems to grow.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

It's not commonly known as "The mile a minute vine" for nothing!

It's not unattractive though, and a very quick way of disguising unsightly objects (it's basically a climber) but it will need to be regularly kept in check as it doesn't know when to stop!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Jay, I plopped it in one of my borders over night until I could plant it the next day and the next day it had twined itself around a bamboo stick I had supporting a daisy - five times!  I had to gently unravel it so I could move it.  I'm hoping it climbs up our Pussy Willow Tree, as it seems to have a rampant growing habit too!

It's a horrible plant. I put it on a par with Japanese knotweed for nuisance value.  I would avoid it like the plague. There are so many other better choices  :(

I watched a new neighbour spend weeks removing it from all over their house - needless to say a few weeks later it was as lush and blooming as ever! It is beautiful, just be sure that you really want it!   :)

I grew this once. I removed it a few months later and will never plant it again it's a nightmare.

I remember pruning back a russian vine and finding a five foot by five foot rhododendron under it. Goodness said the garden's owner, didn't know we owned that. They'd been there 30 years.
