They where most commonly used by Victorian gardeners to force crops like Melons, Cucumbers, Strawberries, and Radishes. In fact any crop that was needed in the kitchen by the cook out of season, could be grown in a Hotbed.

This is built like a raised bed system, ideally using fresh manure but you could use grass clippings with manure mixed in? works well for other people. :)  :)

Haven't had time to try this yet but had a great idea about this the other day.

You know how compacted cuttings form a nice crust on the underside of your Flymo? How about trying to make flowerpots using two flowerpots that fit inside each other, with a layer of grass cuttings squashed in between and stuck in the airing cupboard.

If sufficiently compacted, it could make a useful substitute for peat pots.

I'm gonna have a go at the weekend.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

Sounds like it might work, but won't be putting any in the airing cupboard, OH would kill me...  think of the nasty smelly towels/sheets etc.., think i'd stick em at the back of the shed for a while.

We used our grass cuttings for earthing up the spuds and leeks... kept it in a corner until needed then chucked it on.  Worked better for us because the (raised) beds are smallish and not very full with added material yet.  Did put some in the compost, but the compost is growing some nice spuds too at the mo...
