carrot problem.

Sowed the seed about 4 weeks ago (in greenhouse), still nothing.  Variety 'Autumn King # 2'.

I sowed the same variety last year (different packet) and non of them sprouted either, although they were sowed on (not so finely tilled) heavy soil, so I put it down to that. This year they are in new, well draining sandy loam compost.  :(

Carrots can be funny vegetables. Mine go in pots in a sunny place outside and either grow or they don't. They have done for the past two years.

Perhaps the greenhouse doesn't suit them.

I've grown Autumn King for the last 5 years.... this year I am still waiting for the first row to germinate..... I live in hope. ;)

I have found that a very light covering of fine soil over the carrot seed, keeping the soil moist but not sodden and patience works.

If you do not first suck-seed sow again.... although the seed is not cheap one packet of germinated Autumn King, weeded and tended can repay you many times over. They last really well in the ground until spring if you live in a mild-weathered area.

"Highly commended by the Royal Horticultural Society, UK. Carrot Nantes Frubund is the first genuine autumn sowing carrot, exceptionally early and cold resistant. It will give you carrots in your garden in the spring when nobody else has them and when they are fetching high prices in the shops. A very important autumn sowing vegetable breakthrough."

I'm a fan of early Nantes 2, so this sounds ideal. But lots of T&M Specialist Varieties sound ideal when I rad their catalogue ... :)

I have just made some mini raised beds for my carrots and I'm now wondering if I could make a cold frame top to fit on them and go for a second crop!  :)

I planted one of the Autumn sowing variety in my garden veg patch last october and thought none had come up, then discovered 2 very nice specimens in late february while weeding  :)
Not had much luck at the plot though, but soil is rather heavy although a previous occupant has tried to dig in sand in several places. So far, none of the ones in the raised bed have come up either  :( they've been in about 4 weeks now - I must not dig them up yet....

Hi...Don't realy know if this will help others..but here goes...
What I find and do when planting carrot seeds direct into the plot/soil is,
with a trowel scrape a furrow, say 1" -2" deep, fill with compost,
then water well, sow the seeds, cover the seeds again with compost,
gently water again... and leave 'em to it...

Seems to help, as the young seedlings have light soil to start with.

I sowed Yellowstone on 1st April and they are just above ground now and also Early nantes in the window box by the greenhouse a week lateer and one or 2 have just started coming up today!

I like that idea.  Any reason why I can't use it for all my veg planted direct at the plot?
