I don't have a fruit cage - yet, but reading about others experiences, you'll need both top and sides as the little stinkers will simply walk into the cage otherwise. You'll need to leave at least a foot space above the plants as the birds would try to land on the screening and their weight might bring them close to the fruit. Sides should get pegged down against wind, and smart alecky birds. Some folks prefer the cages tall enough so they can walk inside, others simply lift back the screening or crawl through low tunnels. It's all personal preference and the size of your wallet. One tip: get the best you can afford as cheap stuff will rip easily.

Top tips thanks
I never even thought about the fat birds using their weight to lower the netting to the fruit or how I was going to get in!

You have given me some things to weight up before I go buying anything.
Thanks

Have a top which can be removed as snow on top is very heavy.
If it is going to be permanent use sturdy poles & net, then make a roof with net. Secure roof to sides with wire or cable ties.
