what should i add to the soil
« on: February 14, 2010, 14:24 »
as a allotment holder i'm growing a number of different veg, i would like to ask what should i add in the terms of growmore ect.
i know blood fish and bone is good but what else????
i am on sandy soil so most things will wash through quite quick.

If the soil is sandy you need as much home made compost or well rotted manure as you can source, to bulk the soil up a bit.
BF&B is the organic equivalent of Growmore (the chemical fertilizer) so you wouldn't use both together.

On the plus side you should grow good carrots/parsnips.....but don't add manure where you are growing them.

I just use BFB a couple of weeks before any veg will be going in the ground and add a little bit in the planting hole to give it a boost. Then add some more every 6 weeks.
Use bonemeal for fruit plants.
Woooooooooooooo

At the top end of my allotment I have a very clay soil (brown colouring ) which is quite near the surface. I was wondering what the best way to improve this soil would be.

Exactly what Mumofstig recommended for the sandy soil.  As much organic material you can jam in there.  Dig it in as much as you can, and lay it over the surface as mulch (leaf, home made compost etc) In a few years your will see a massive improvement

Bonemeal helps root growth so should  be used for rootcrops, trees and shrubs. :D

We're not promoting organic-only gardening here by saying get as much organic matter into poor soil as you can. It's about improving the structure and allowing it to hold on to plant nutrients and make them available. This is my fourth year in a garden started from scratch on heavy boulder clay and when I forked over a bed yesterday I noticed a real improvement. The soil is dark and crumbles easily whereas a hole I dug for a new fruit tree still had the red-brown sticky stuff in it.

And what did you do to achieve this ?
