no courgettes
« on: August 10, 2011, 09:36 »
One out of my three courgette plants is refusing to produce any courgettes. The plant is very large and bushy, and is producing lots of flowers, but they are all male. I'm not sure what the variety is but it's either Black Beauty or All Green Bush. Any ideas?

Our all green bush plants haven't produced a single fruit this year. We've only had a few flowers and the odd very small fruit from the yellow variety - can't recall the name off hand.

Give it a feed and if that doesn't work chop it back hard only leaving 6 or so leaves.
This will stress the plant and make it produce fruits  ;)

I have done this on my left hand plant as the right and middle plants were producing well but the left one was producing lots of leaves and male flowers but no females.

I chopped it back hard and now it's producing as good as the others.

I was given this advice by one of the oldies.  ;)

There's not much they don't know.  ::)

Don't know the variety (bought them) but I have one yellow and one green. The yellow has started lots of fruit, but very few are usable size. The flowers are not opening at all, so no pollination. Now my prolific green is going the same way. I have put it down to the fact that they are on the drive, and with all the cold wind we have had this summer (!) a wind tunnel has kept the plants too cold.

That seems to make sense. It is a very bushy plant with lots more leaves than the other two, which are producing well. I will give it a good chop - thanks

Mine have been going mad, to the extent of producing marrows if we aren't quick enough - unlike our greenhouse toms.

Chop them hard back and pick the fruit as soon as they are about 3inch long...I have been getting about 20 a week for nigh on 6 weeks. Just made a huge chocolate courgette cake and a big bowl of courgette soup....and still have fed most of the street with them. Good luck!

 :D this has definitely been a courgette and squash year for me - more fruits than I can cope with.  Flower on Monday, courgette on Tuesday, marrow by Wednesday!

Sweetcorn on the other hand, pah, no idea what went wrong there - first time I've had a failure  :(

Mine started off beautifully, loads of flowers and lots of fruit. Now out of the patch cos they all got powdery mildew and the fruit were rotting off or so tough they needed to be peeled before eating.

Im with argylie. Barely a fruit. Lots of good growth, even a lot of female flowers on some plants. They just keep rotting off despite polinating by hand!  I love courgettes and never have enough but this is worst year ever. growing green bush and some kind of round yellow ones (not that Iv seen one yet - hopeless). They only go yellow when they're rotting - maybe that's what the packet means!
