Ants in my compost
« on: August 30, 2007, 21:45 »
Just noticed that a colney of ants have clamed squatters rights in my compost bin, is this ok and will it effect it in any way?

Nah IMHO ignore them they should clear off when you turn it over a few times or it gets too hot etc.

I think I've got a rat in mine - a tunnel into the heart of the heap has appeared. I'm a bit worried about turning it in case I spear it, or it comes running out at me (not sure which one would be worse   ).
trying to be organic...

Turn it over with a fork, the rat is probably only coming in the evenings to feed this time of the year a little later and it will think about taking up residence for the winter.
Keep moving it about will make the rat feel unsafe and put it off coming back hopefully

Incidentally I've all ways noticed this time of year you generally see an increase in rat activity as they start moving back to the suburbs now the fields are being cleared.
