re-using plot
« on: July 14, 2010, 22:42 »
Once my potatoes have been lifted, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could put in the ground afterwards?  I have heard that traditionally leeks were a popular choice.  Any others I might try?

I'm putting EPS broccoli and savoy cabbage in now that the first and second earlies are out.  The soil will have to be well compacted though as it will be really loose from having dug the tatties up.

Leeks are a good idea if you have some already grown and waiting to be planted out.
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

You should be able to buy ready grown leek seedlings from a nursary (at a price!) so all is not lost if you've not sown them.

Last year I decided I wanted some PSB plants in Early August, I ordered some plants from Marshalls ... they arrived in mid September, were tiny (I could have raised larger plants from seed in the time) and  still have not produced anything.

OTOH a couple of years ago I was in a similar position (wanting leek seedlings), on another forum some kind person said they had loads, posted me some of their seedlings and Bob was my Uncle :)

Luckily I have some leeks ready to go, so gonna plant them out.  I also have about 6 cabbages ready to go out too.  I have some broccoli and kale plug plants which are a bit late but need to go out too.  Do I need to enrich the ground at all before they go in or do you think it should be ok as it is?

Swedes always seem to do well for me after lifting potatoes.

Otherwise maybe a pumpkin or two or the dependable leeks :D
