This years Strawberry plants, any good for next year?
« on: September 08, 2009, 10:48 »
I have some in a planter and they have fruited fairly well,

Q.   If I take them out of the pot and plant in a larger space will they grow again next year or are they not keen on being moved ?

I have found that established plants do not like being moved.

However, nothing ventured, nothing gained & other well know quotations.

Try it, taking as much compost with the root as you can and with the minimal amount of root disturbance.

Hi, I dug up 65 strawberry plants that had established themselves around my existing bed about 6 weeks ago, not all of them were 1st year runners, I chopped all the old leaf off and re-planted them in pots and put them in the greenhouse and they started growing new crowns within a couple of days.
Last week I planted up two new beds with them and they have taken really well, in fact they have started flowering and throwing out runners ( not sure if thats a good thing tho at this time of year)
Leaving them in the planter probably wouldn't do them much good anyway as there's not much room for large roots and would probably end up with smaller less appetising fruits next year anyway (correct me if I'm wrong).
So in my humble opinion Kagganz I would give it ago, as DD says, nothing ventured nothing gained
