Can leek plants go out yet?

Mine are approaching pencil thickness. Is it too early to plant them out?

No not at all early. If it is really hot and dry where you are though just give them an extra drop of water in their hole a few days after planting to give them a chance to settle their roots

Good idea, as long as they're an early variety.

I watched a whole crop dwindle one year, before realising that I'd sown some of these earlies, expecting a late crop to see me through from November.

Funnily enough, after joining this gardening website, I learned what to do in time for the next year..;0)

Should be ok, they like a long growing season. I am waiting for other things to crop first then will reuse the space with leeks.

I'm putting mine out, mainly as they are too crowded in the seed tray so I'm putting them in the ground to give them space to get bigger. If necessary I can dig them up later and dib them in properly.

A bit like Thrutchington and a178.  My leeks will go in when there is space where some overwintered broad beans will crop in june.  I have however transplanted them to a bed in the Lotty to grow on a bit better than in the trays where they have got a bit cramped and tangled.  I hope in this way to avoid too much root damage when I put them in their final spot.
