Title: Growing Swede from plug plants & Sprouts advice
Post by: Stratts on July 22, 2011, 22:16
My uncle gave me a few swede plants today but I thought you sowed them straight into the soil.

Am I ok to plant them and am I too late to sow as I have also been given some seeds?

Also got given a load of small Brussels plug plants today. How long will they take from now to harvesting?

Cheers

you can grow them in trays/pots then remove before root becomes est ,i do parsnips this way then transplant after the third leaf comes i make a hole like leek then place in hole and gently back fill any later than this the root is disturbed so wont grow right

swede transplant ok, cos the bit that fattens up sits mostly above the soil, rather than below it, so any misshaped roots caused by transplanting aren't a problem :)

Sorry can't answer the Brussels question.

Untill this season I had always direct sown swedes and never had a very good crop, but having read on here earlier in the year that they could be grown as plugs I've tried it.
I sowed into plugs, potted them on into 3" pots and planted them out and coverd them with envioromesh.
Even this early on they are so far the best swedes I have ever grown  :D .

Too late for small Brussels, in my opinion.

I was late planting largish plants in June last year and they only just made something, so judging by that experience, small plants a month later is a non-starter.

Bit of a rip off then with regards to Brussels as the guy that gave me them bought them specially from a nursery.

They shouldn't really be selling them if they are not likely to come to much surely?!!

hi strats,it really depends on the variety with your sprouts, some mature before crimbo and some after.if you know the variety google it or ask again on here.my nieghbour on the lotty has only just put his jan/feb sprouts in ,but they had four true leaves on.

Four true leaves is a lot futher down the line than plug plants!
