Title: Sprouts: Nine plants enough?
Post by: michellela on October 10, 2010, 18:18
I don't know how reliable sprouts are when it comes to both germination and yield so I'm not sure if my plan of growing three plants each of three varieties is enough.  I'd be growing 3xSanda, 3xSeven Hills and 3xred (variety unknown as yet).  So, over to the experts, what do you think?

Depends how often you eat them!

I grow 30 plants for the 3 of us. It's windy in Loughborough.

I take it from how you've put it that this is next year's plan.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I love sprouts so I'd eat them if they were there.

I'm glad I asked because I thought maybe I was doing way too many but if you're doing 30 then I may do more as I believe I'll have more than enough room.  And yes this is for next year when I've got my plot prepared, assuming I get it all dug over before the ground gets to difficult to get my fork through.

Don't worry about getting the ground too well dug over for sprouts, they like it nice and firm.

I just hoed the weeds off the top of mine and popped them straight in this year.

That's good to know.  I still have to dig to get rid of all the teasels, thistles, comfrey and whatnot before adding my manure mulch.  Once I've done that then other than planting the sprouts and pulling the weeds as they grow I'm not to dig over again, right?

Just keep it well hoed once planted and you'll be OK. You can dig over once they're aout as you'll be growing a different kind of crop there next time.

I've got an old heavy lawn roller on my plot and if it's a previously dug bit I'll run over with that before planting brassicas. (Not if the ground's wet though).
