It might work for growing mushrooms?  The instructions on the mushroom spawn that I got ask for straw bale made into compost to grow the mushrooms on.
I can check the instructions if you were interested.

There`s a good chance that any mulch is going to provide a refuge for slugs. An advantage of straw over something like news paper or black plastic however is that it is very easy to rake away from plants and replace after dealing with the blighters in your preferred manner.

In my experience it also seems to attract birds (esp blackbirds) who`ll love rooting around in it looking for nasties (from your P.O.V) to eat.

Also useful for compost, temporary paths etc.

T&M have some very similar instructions on their website
http://www.thompson-morgan.com/static-images/tandm/pdfs/culturals/MUSHROOM_white%20cap.pdf

I've got the spores but no straw (didn't read the instructions properly!) so I'm wondering if it works with multi-purpose compost.

Just a thought. If you are breaking up mouldy straw be careful not to breathe the mould spores in, not good for you. :(
